Transportation Coupon Program
What is the Transportation Coupon Program?
The Transportation Coupon Program was created by MCH to help expand the transportation options available to people with disabilities in its service area. The program uses grant money from the federal government, as well as some local funding to subsidize transportation from taxis by a reduction of 50%.
What does the coupon program do?
The Transportation Coupon Program empowers people when they are able to use the coupons to arrange transportation for any purpose. Coupons can be used to go visit friends, go shopping, go to religious services or any other reason you can think of! The program was designed to give individuals with disabilities more freedom in arranging their own transportation and going where they wanted and needed to go in hopes of living a happy, healthy and socialized life.
How does the coupon program work?
Approved applicants purchase coupons at a cost of 50% of their face value. Coupons are purchased from the MCH administrative office directly or from an approved agency. Coupons are then redeemed at full face value, just like cash, when payment is made to the transportation provider at the end of the trip. Therefore, the actual cost of the ride using the Transportation Coupons is equal to half the cost of the normal taxi rate! Coupons are good only for transportation and only from approved providers.
Who is eligible?
Eligibility for this program is based on disability as defined by the Americans with Disability Act (ADA). According to the ADA, "Disability means, with respect to an individual, a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of such individual; a record of such impairment; or being regarded as having such an impairment". This disability could be permanent or temporary; we encourage all individuals with a disability to apply.
